The Avenue Veterinary Group is a long-established practice (the website says it has been caring for pets and owners for over 50 years). Based on recent reviews, it appears set up mainly for routine, day-to-day care and standard appointments—owners mention straightforward scheduling and generally positive consult experiences. However, one recent reviewer reports a serious concern about telephone triage and urgency handling for a collapsing cat, describing appointment offers ranging from the same day mid-afternoon to the following day, which they felt was not appropriate for the situation. Ownership (independent vs corporate group) isn’t stated in the information provided.

I telephoned Avenue Vets at approximately 10:30am explaining that my pet cat had collapsed, was unable to stand, and was frothing at the mouth. Whoever answered my call wasn't capable of carrying out triage, being unable to grasp the need for urgent treatment, and initially telling me to bring my pet into the surgery at 5pm the following day!!!! On explaining that my cat would be dead by then, I was offered a 5pm appointment that same day. I explained that was still not soon enough, only to be then offered a 2.15pm appointment, followed by a further offer of a 2:00pm appointment (but still nowhere soon enough in my opinion, given the obvious severity of my cat's illness and his critical state). Although in my experience, this veterinary practice is more than capable of dealing with day-to-day non-emergency health care, it fails massively as regards dealing with emergency treatment, with staff appearing not to grasp the severity of some critical situations. Whilst I have no doubt that all staff at this veterinary practice have the animals' wellbeing at heart, I advise further training regarding triage. I plan to adopt another cat and to register with a different veterinary practice that is more adept at dealing with emergency cases.

New vet was friendly, caring and genuinely interested in our dog. A pity that she isn’t full time.
